Trainees will be mentored in evangelism, one-to-one discipleship, short talk preparation, leading a Bible study and sharing their faith - being given practical opportunities to experience and exercise what they are learning. Trainees will take up a regular supervised leadership role in their church, related to their interest area/s (or beyond!).
Each trainee will meet regularly with their trainer who will, alongside them, read ministry papers, selected books, and encourage the trainees in service in their nominated ministry areas, spending time developing each of the three strands:
- Being Like Jesus — Developing of personal godliness through the strengthening of faith by the encouragement of daily Bible reading and prayer.
- Thinking Like Jesus — Promoting Biblical thinking through reading the Bible and other helpful books.
- Serving Like Jesus — Introducing and developing thinking and skills in certain core areas of gospel ministry.
The program is designed to be tailored to the trainee's areas of interest and time availability. It would, however, be reasonable to expect 8 hours of reading, preparation and participation to be allocated each week. It is commendable for trainees to try extend themselves beyond their usual areas of service; especially while they have the wisdom, support and guidance of a trainer.
Pathways & Funding
The METRO Committee has undertaken to assist churches in their investment in training people for gospel ministry through EquipMETRO. METRO asks that churches contribute a nominal amount of $350 towards the training of each EquipMETRO trainee serving in their church.
Funds will be used to subsidise the provision of training materials, books, and trainees’ attendance at Engage Leader’s Conference. METRO requires an extract from a Session meeting confirming the funding and approval of a EquipMETRO trainee and appointment of their trainer before a trainee can commence the traineeship.
